Alan Purves Solo

The fourteen pearls on ‘Hide & Squeak’ make you aware of how important the role of percussion is in music. Masterly. — Jazzenzo

Alan ‘Gunga’ Purves is a completely unique percussionist, always looking for new sounds and playing methods. Quite a few bands and musicians have worked with him, such as Carel Craayenhof, Fernando Lameirinhas, Tjeerd Bomhoff (Dazzled Kid), Sean Bergin, Ernst Reijseger, John Zorn and many others. His collaboration with Corrie van Binsbergen dates back to 1999 and culminating in the many concerts with Toon Tellegen en het Wisselend Toonkwintet.

Hide & Squeak is the title of his latest solo cd, released by Brokken Records.

For his second solo cd Alan Purves recorded fourteen solo pieces using a wide range of obscure instrumentslike the hapi, srute box, boomwackers and balafon, or self-made and named by Purves himself, such as the brimbram, the hemarimba, jawbeans and moanballs. Besides all of these there are quite a few objects that are not meant as musical instruments but which turn out to be so in the hands of Purves, such as the frying pan, wine bottles, toy pigs and cookie jars. Despite his experimental quest for new sounds, Purves’ compositions are always clear, swinging and sometimes meditative with a light ethnic touch.
